Marmara

an island in the western part of the Sea of Marmara, belonging to Turkey. Area, 130 sq km. The shores are steep and cleft by small bays. The island has hills and low mountains, with elevations to 699 m (Kapi Dag). There are olive groves. The industrial activities include wine-making and fishing. Marmara Island is a tourist site. There are deposits of white marble—hence the names of the island and sea (the Turkish word for marble is mermer).
