Sea of. a deep inland sea in NW Turkey, linked with the Black Sea by the Bosporus and with the Aegean by the Dardanelles: separates Turkey in Europe from Turkey in Asia. Area: 11 471 sq. km (4429 sq. miles)

Marmara

 

an island in the western part of the Sea of Marmara, belonging to Turkey. Area, 130 sq km. The shores are steep and cleft by small bays. The island has hills and low mountains, with elevations to 699 m (Kapi Dag). There are olive groves. The industrial activities include wine-making and fishing. Marmara Island is a tourist site. There are deposits of white marble—hence the names of the island and sea (the Turkish word for marble is mermer).

The presence of abundance of wind power resources in Marmara Region has resulted in double digit growth of Turkey wind power installed capacity in recent years.
Turkey's ties with Israel hit a nadir over the Mavi Marmara incident, but they first soured after Erdogan's criticism of the Israeli offensive in Gaza in 2009.
Sarah Colborne, who was on board the Mavi Marmara when the raid happened last year, slammed the report yesterday.
Asked about the deadly raid on the Mavi Marmara on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, he said: "It has been a disaster for the people involved, obviously those many killed and injured and it has also been a disaster for Israel."

But there were no 'terrorists' on the Mavi Marmara, there was no live fire from the ship and there was no 'lynch mob' waiting for the soldiers, as the Jerusalem Post claimed.
Now it is home to the medical faculty of Marmara University.
