(Kara Shirei) an Azerbaijan variety of wine grape. The grape, which has an average ripening period, is medium-sized (12-17 mm in diameter), rounded or slightly oval, and dark blue, almost black. The skin is quite thick. The flesh is juicy, with a unique, delicate aroma. The juice is lightly colored. Matrasa is used to produce high-quality table wines and also dessert (Cahors-type) wines. It ripens in the first half of September. Yield is up to 10 tons per hectare. The variety is little affected by Oidium or mildew; it is drought-resistant. It has been regionalized in the Azerbaijan SSR, Dagestan ASSR, and Kazakh SSR and is planted in the Turkmen SSR and Ukrainian SSR.
