a city in E central Turkey: nearby is the ruined Roman and medieval city of Melitene (Old Malatya). Pop.: 448 000 (2005 est.)

Malatya

 

a city in southeastern Turkey at the northern foot of the Malatya Mountains. Administrative center of Malatya Vilayet. Population, 130,300 (1970). Malatya is a highway junction and a large marketplace for agricultural produce (grains, raw leather, wool). Food-processing (flour, bread, sugar, alcoholic beverages), textile, and tobacco enterprises are located there.
