Mellette, Arthur Calvin

Mellette, Arthur Calvin

(1842–96) governor; born in Henry County, Ind. A Republican lawyer, he ran the Muncie Times and served in the Indiana legislature (1872–73). Moving to the Dakota Territory, he served on the constitutional convention (1883), establishing state budget limits. First South Dakota governor (1889–93), he used his own money to repay funds stolen by the state treasurer.
