In east-central KY, east of Lexington; organized Mar 10, 1869 from Montgomery, Bath, Wolfe, Morgan, and Powell counties. Name Origin: For Richard Hickman Menefee (1809-41), KY Commonwealth attorney, legislator, and U.S. representative (1837-39). Spelling evidently changed when county was named
