Established: 1973.
Location:Along the Illinois River, about 60 miles west of Springfield, Illinois.
Facilities:Viewing sites, hiking trails, interpretive display.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicycling, educational programs.
Special Features:Close up views of eagles from Beach Road.
Habitats: When complete, the refuge will total 5,255 acres of backwater lakes, bottomland forest, upland forest, prairie, seasonal wetland, and permanent marsh habitat. Its present size is 3,852.
Access: Open daylight hours year round.
Wild life: Grasshopper sparrows, dickcissels, meadowlarks, prothonotary warblers, woodpeckers, deer, turkeys, and squirrels.
