The dilute sludge fraction, with small solid particles, which often only settle with difficulty, is mixed with inorganic waste sludge received separately (water works sludge), conditioned with milk of lime and dewatered in filter presses.
For the "3-4% caustic lime in the form of a thick milk" use 1/2 cup of milk of lime for each 20 pounds of beets you started with: milk of lime is calcium hydroxide and water, available from your pharmacy and your pump.
In sugarbeet processing, the sensor can be used to monitor addition of alkaline milk of lime, which is used to raise the pH of raw sugar juice.
