Established: 1976.
Location:A corridor along the Minnesota River, from Fort Snelling State Park (near downtown Minneapolis) southwest to Jordan, Minnesota.
Facilities:Visitor center, auditorium, observation platform, trails, historic features.
Activities:Fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, educational programs.
Special Features:Urban-area refuge is home to about 50 mammals, 30 species of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 200 species of birds.
Habitats: 14,000 acres of riverine wetlands, fens, seeps, floodplain forests, oak svannas, forest, native grasslands.
Access: Open during daylight hours.
Wild life: Owls, mallards, heron, egret, geese, American coots, doves, coyotes, badgers, and white-tailed deer.
