Muntiacus

a genus of mammals classified in the family Cervidae of the order Artiodactyla and comprising the muntjacs. The body length is 80 to 100 cm, and the shoulder height, 45 to 58 cm. The tail is long and thin. Antlers of up to 15 cm in length occur in the male and are carried on long bony pedicels. The antlers are shed annually. The upper canines in the males are long and protrude from the mouth. The fur is short and soft; the coloration ranges from yellowish-gray to dark brown with whitish markings. There are five species, which are distributed in Southeast Asia and on the islands of Sumatra, Java, and Kalimantan. The Muntiacus feed on grasses, leaves, and shoots. They are primarily solitary animals and inhabit jungle thickets. Mating occurs throughout the year, usually resulting in one, rarely two, offspring. The Muntiacus are hunted for their flesh and hide.
