Myre-Big Island State Park
Location:3 miles southeast of Albert Lea on County Highway 38.
Facilities:93 drive-in campsites (32 with electrical hookups), showers (é),
flush toilets (é), 4 backpack campsites, group camp, group center,
camper cabin (seasonal), picnic area, open picnic shelter (é),
enclosed picnic shelter, hiking trails (16 miles), self-guided trails
(8.25 miles), wheelchair-accessible trail (0.5 miles), mountain bike
trails (7 miles), ski trails (8 miles), snowmobile trails (7 miles),
warming house, boat launch, canoe rental, gift shop.
Activities:Camping, lake fishing, boating (with restrictions), canoeing, hiking,
mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, birdwatching.
Special Features:Park is one of many good birding spots in southern Minnesota,
especially during spring and fall migration. Regular avian visitors
include birds of prey, shore birds, ducks, geese, and songbirds,
including the indigo bunting, eastern bluebird, rose-breasted grosbeak,
northern oriole, and eastern wood pewee. Unique features at the park
include the 116-acre Big Island, which is covered with maple/basswood
forest, and a glacial esker located in the northeast section of the
park.
