NHIN

(Nationwide Health Information Network) A set of health information exchange (HIE) protocols initiated by the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). The NHIN is both a public and private project. If an organization cannot entirely conform to the standard, it may use a Health Information Service Provider (HSP) to connect to the NHIN. The NHIN is designed as a "network of networks," built out of state and regional health information exchanges (HIEs) and other networks to support the exchange of health information by connecting these networks and the systems they, in turn, connect.
The panel was convened about a year ago by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) under a Health and Human Services department contract to assist in the development of a Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).
This envisioned national health information infrastructure (NHIN) features electronic data exchange, which is dramatically changing the work of those involved in communicating and disseminating personal medical information and can improve the quality of health care, reduce healthcare costs, and improve communication among healthcare providers.
