IP.Check provides continuous monitoring of an organization's complete Internet protocol-based environment, including all HTTP Web servers, FTP file servers, SMTP mail servers, and
NNTP news servers.
In addition, firewalls may be able to support applications such as SOCKS, which allows the user to convert standard TCP client programs to proxied versions of those same programs; domain name service (DNS), which translates host names into IP addresses and vice-versa; Finger, which allows users to find out about other users on the Internet; network news transfer protocol (
NNTP), which accepts inbound news feeds and stores them on disk; network time protocol (NTP), which allows computers on a network to figure out the current time; and possibly other custom-defined services.
Marionet also uses Apple's Thread Manager to full advantage for asynchronous operation, and has complete control over HTTP,
NNTP, e-mail, FTP, DNS and Gopher Internet protocols.
Two mobile-transparent applications that have been implemented using the Rover Toolkit are Rover
NNTP proxy, a USENET reader proxy, and Rover HTTP proxy, a proxy for Web browsers.
The two remaining sections look at the functions necessary for performing remote administration and how to index a site, manage an FTP site and work with the e-mail and
NNTP services included with IIS.
For example, port number 443 has been assigned for HTTP with SSL (https), 465 for SMTP with SSL (ssmtp), and 563 for
NNTP with SSL (snntp).
