In south-central MN, northwest of Mankato; established Mar 5, 1853 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For Joseph Nicholas Nicollet (1786-1843), French explorer who mapped area of MN, ND and SD; author of Map of the Hydrographical Basin of the Upper Mississippi River.
