Nansen bottle

[′nan·sən ‚bäd·əl]
(engineering)
A bottlelike water-sampling device with valves at both ends that is lowered into the water by wire; at the desired depth it is activated by a messenger which strikes the reversing mechanism and inverts the bottle, closing the valves and trapping the water sample inside. Also known as Petterson-Nansen water bottle; reversing water bottle.

Water samples for the measurement of chemical components (except for trace metals) were taken using Niskin bottles (General Oceanics) with reversing thermometers.
First, Chan drops the Niskin bottle 50 meters below the surface, pulls it back up and pours the water into glass jars.
During the 12-day expedition, Methane In The Arctic Shelf and Slope (MITAS-1), the crew conducted 34 conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) water column casts using a rosette of Niskin bottles and collected sediment samples from 14 piston cores, three vibrocores and 20 multicores.
At each site, the rosette was lowered into the water by winch and the Niskin bottles were closed at various depths by Seabird 911+ controller.
