Much of the Seward Peninsula is encompassed in the Nome Census Area which has a population of just less than 10,000.
Local government, as a whole, represents about 38 percent of all the employment in the Nome Census Area, Shanks says.
The Nome Census Area also has a significant number of retail and service jobs, which tend to be part-time and lower-paying.
In November, for instance, the unemployment rate was 11.5 percent for the Nome Census Area. "They're running about 2 percent higher than they have in the past couple of years," Shanks said.
