a breed of trotter horses. It was developed in Norfolk County, Great Britain, in the 18th century by crossing local light-harness horses with purebred saddle and Dutch breeds. There are two types of Norfolk trotters: the Roadster (a massive, rarely encountered horse) and the Hackney (a new, lighter type). Hackneys are of medium height, up to 158 cm, and have a beautiful head and neck, a strong, short back, and relatively short legs. They trot beautifully but are not particularly fast. The Norfolk Trotter was used in developing the American Trotter (USA) and Anglo-Norman breeds of horses (France). It was used to develop the Tori breed in the USSR. The Norfolk Trotter is raised principally in Great Britain and the USA as a racing and harness horse.
