Norwegian Current

a warm current in the Norwegian Sea flowing along the coast of Norway; a branch of the North Atlantic Drift.

The Norwegian Current has an average speed of about 25 cm per sec, the temperature of the water is 5°–7° C in the winter and 10°-12° C in the summer, and the salt content is 34–35‰. The Norwegian Current exerts a moderating effect on the Scandinavian climate and weather. In the region of 67° N lat. and 3° E long., the Norwegian Current divides into two branches. The western branch becomes the West Spitsbergen Current, and the eastern branch flows around the North Cape and enters the Barents Sea as the North Cape Current.
