Established: 1980.
Location:150 miles west of Fairbanks, Alaska, in the central Yukon River Valley.
Facilities:Visitor contact station (in Galena).
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, hunting, primitive camping.
Special Features:A 223-mile segment of the Nowitna River, a nationally designated Wild River, bisects the refuge and forms a broad meandering floodplain.
Habitats: More than 2,100,000 acres of river valley, wetlands, forest and tundra.
Access: Access to the refuge is possible by airplane, boat, snowmobile, dog sled, or on foot.
Wild life: Moose, bear, caribou, martens, wolverine, ducks, geese, trumpeter swans, bald eagle, northern harrier, red-tailed hawk, salmon, sheefish and northern pike.
