Nueva Palmira, one of the most important commercial ports in Uruguay, is situated at the confluence of the Uruguay and Parana rivers.
The plan is to take the waterway north to south, from Puerto Caceres in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso into the Parana Delta at the Uruguayan port of
Nueva Palmira. Paraguay has proposed a rail spur between Robore, in Bolivia's eastern department of Santa Cruz, and Puerto Carmelo Peralta in Paraguay, to connect the transcontinental railroad to the waterway.
Paraguay's port authority manages free trade ports and warehouses in Argentina (Buenos Aires and Rosario); Brazil (Paranagua, Santos, and Rio Grande do Sul); Chile (Antofagasta and Mejillones); and Uruguay (Montevideo and
Nueva Palmira).
The port of Montevideo, on the Rio de la Plata, along with those at
Nueva Palmira and Fray Bentos on Uruguay's coast, create the green belt of the Parana--Uruguay Waterway and serve as the entrance and exit points not only for Uruguayan products, but also those from other countries in the region.
Lada will produce a similar number of vehicles in Uruguay in partnership with Montevideo auto distributor Efecto S.A., possibly at an idle auto-assembly plant in the
Nueva Palmira free zone previously used by Volkswagen.
One year ago an official Bolivian delegation boarded a vessel at Puerto Quijano in Santa Cruz Province and, several days later, disembarked at
Nueva Palmira, Uruguay on the Atlantic coast, following stops in Corumba, Brazil; Asuncion, Paraguay; and Rosario, Argentina.
