Olenekian Stage

 

second lowest stage of the Triassic system, roughly corresponding to the upper half of the Scythian (Werfenian) stage or to the Campilian (Tirolian) stage of Western Europe. The Olenekian stage was identified by L. D. Kiparisova and Iu. N. Popov in 1956. A type section from the lower course of the Olenek River is composed of argillites and aleurolites with concretions of limestones containing ammonites. Olenekian deposits are widespread in Eurasia, North America, and New Zealand. The term is used mainly by Soviet geologists.
