(349–348 B.C.), a war between the Macedonian king Philip II and the city of Olynthus and its allies —32 cities on the Chalcidic Peninsula. Having taken a number of cities of the Chalcidice and having thus isolated Olynthus, Philip II began his siege of Olynthus in the spring of 348. Athens sided with the city, but its assistance proved tardy and ineffective. Olynthus was taken, sacked, razed, and set afire. Most of its citizens were sold into slavery to work in the mines; some were resettled in Thrace. According to Demosthenes, the cities allied with Olynthus were also razed.
