OpenMoko

(OPEN MObile Communications) A Linux-based operating system designed for a mobile environment. Unlike other mobile operating systems, which are geared to phone and related applications, OpenMoko is a fully functioning operating system that can be programmed for any function. Including GPS as part of its core features and initially targeted at GSM cellphones, the first OpenMoko phone was the Neo1973, introduced in mid-2007.

The Openmoko GNU/Linux-based software stack is 100% FOSS (Free Open Source Software), supported by GNU/Linux development tools.

STMICROELECTRONICS' MEMS ENABLE MOTION SENSING IN OPENMOKO

Openmoko, developer of the first open mobile computing platform has opened its online store for purchase of the Openmoko Neo FreeRunner, a mobile device that the company said will help to enable ubiquitous computing for the 21st century.

The Openmoko Neo FreeRunner utilizes GNU/Linux and comes with core software for dialing, SMS and recording contacts.

Openmoko frees developers from constraints of closed mobile architectures so they can apply the power of mobility and a flexible development platform to create mobile applications for specialized markets.

The Openmoko Neo FreeRunner has a suggested retail price of $399.
