In northwestern NY on Lake Ontario, north of Syracuse; organized Mar 1, 1816 from Oneida and Onondage counties. Name Origin: For the Oswego River, which runs through its western part; from Iroquoian osh-we-go, probably 'outpouring,' in reference to the mouth of the Oswego River where it empties into Lake Ontario, also translated 'the place where the valley widens.'
