Shifts of the southern optima are also apparent for several species that do stay in the United States: Acer pensylvanicum, Betula lenta, Carya glabra, Celtis occidentalis, Cercis canadensis, Cornus florida, Crataegus sp., Diospyros virginiana, Oxydendrum arboreum, Pinus virginiana, Quercus muehlenbergii, Q.

The most dominant species in our forest were Oxydendrum arboreum (L.) DC.
When relative dominance was compared at the genus level, the three most dominant genera in our forest were Quercus (43.7%), Pinus (19.2%), and Oxydendrum (15.9%), while in Cowell's study (3) they were Pinus (20.8%), Quercus (34.3%), and Liriodendron (9.7%).
Significant [Beta] values were obtained for Acer, Betula, Carya, Cornus, Fraxinus, Liriodendron, Nyssa, Oxydendrum, Pinus, Quercus, Tilia, and Tsuga [ILLUSTRATION FOR FIGURE 2 OMITTED].
Amelanchier, Nyssa, Oxydendrum, Tilia, and Tsuga had variable fecundity estimates.
