Päijänne
a lake in southern Finland. Measuring approximately 140 km long and up to 28 km wide, Lake Päijänne has an area of 1,065 sq km and depths to 93 m. It is located in a basin of ancient glacial origin. Its shores are mostly high and extremely ragged. Numerous islands dot the lake, which empties into the Gulf of Finland by way of the Kymi (Kymmene) River. Lake Päijänne is frozen from December through April. It is navigable, and there is fishing. The cities of Lahti and Jyväskylä are on Lake Päijänne.
