Upgrades of chips such as HP
PA-RISC processors are designed to ensure that new chips will understand everything previous generations understood.
As it is, HP-UX 11i v3, the next version of the operating system that incorporates features from Tru64 Unix and its TruCluster clustering software and which is supposed to be based on a single code base for both
PA-RISC and Itanium platforms, was pushed out 12 to 18 months in November 2003.
--32-processor SPECompMpeak2001: SGI Altix (with 32 Itanium 2 processors at 1.5GHz) delivered a leading score of 25,817, a 71 percent improvement over a 32p HP Superdome on 875MHx
PA-RISC scoring 15,025.
(SGI; Mountain View, CA),
PA-RISC from HP, and PowerPC and R564 from IBM Corp.
The new server uses up to 16
PA-RISC 8700 processors, extending HP's mid-range Unix server portfolio which includes the up-to-eight processor HP Server rp7400 (formerly known as the N-class server), and it runs HP-UX 11i - HP's version of the Unix operating system.

PA-RISC stands for Precision Architecture-reduced-instruction-set computing.
(Palo Alto, Calif.) announced business and technology-sharing agreements that will lead to Convex's adoption of HP's
PA-RISC architecture in massively parallel supercomputers it is developing.
It is interesting to note that instead of attacking the Sparc/Solaris base with its own HP-UX servers, which use either
PA-RISC or Itanium processors, HP initially only talked about pushing 32-bit Lintel server iron.
Based on
PA-RISC technology, the PA-8700 processor is available at operating frequencies of 650MHz and 750MHz, featuring 0.75Mb of on-chip cache and 1.50Mb of instruction cache.
The benchmark was run using Informix Extended Parallel Server (XPS) version 8.31.FD1, the company's high-end data warehouse product, on Hewlett-Packard Company's HP 9000 Superdome Enterprise Server equipped with 64 552MHz
PA-RISC 8600 CPUs using the 64-bit HP-UX 11i operating environment and the HP Surestore Disk Array XP512 with its unique crossbar architecture with end-to-end fibre channel infrastructure.
