Paarl

 

a city in the Republic of South Africa, in the southwest of Cape of Good Hope Province. Population including suburbs, 48,600 (1970). The city is connected by railroad with Cape Town. Founded in 1690, Paarl is the center of an important agricultural area. The city has industries producing wine and spirits, jam, canned fruit, and tobacco products. There are also sawmilling and textile-manufacturing enterprises. Paarl has a climatic health resort.
