Palma

 

a city and port in Spain located on the southwest coast of the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands). Capital of the province of Baleares. Population, 222,800 (1971).

Palma is a major tourist center, with up to 2 million tourists visiting annually. The population is chiefly employed in service industries. Palma has enterprises in the food-processing, leather goods and footwear, textile, glass, and machine-building industries. Rugs are also produced by local industry. The port handles more than 1.4 million tons of goods annually. Wine, vegetables, fruit, and almonds are among the city’s exports. There is a major international airport near Palma.
