The term "La
Passacaglia" comes from the Spanish word meaning "street song." The design is an intricate pattern of rosettes, a signature of the Millefiori quilt a name derived from the Italian word meaning "thousand flowers." Each of the over 2,954 pieces of the quilt were hand-stitched by Baker using the English Paper Piecing technique.
The author argues that all four of these REs are initially heard in the first four measures of the concerto; they are then repeated and varied on multiple structural levels throughout all three movements, effectively creating the "great
passacaglia" to which Stravinsky referred in his own description of this work (p.
2, to the last work, Bach's
Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, the Canadian Brass display seemingly effortless playing reminiscent of the best string quartets.
The "
Passacaglia" by Coleman and Kay's "Pastorale" are excerpted movements from larger works but are substantial enough to stand on their own.

You may not be able to sit down at the Rodgers Trillium at your church and bring a hush over the congregation by playing Bach's
Passacaglia in C Minor at an almost-professional level--but you have hobbies and interests as well.
Ironically, it does so by recalling the even earlier Baroque evocation of a Spanish street dance, the
passacaglia: a repeated bass theme, growing in stature, and most stunningly etched by Bach in his great C Minor organ extravaganza.
