Established: Designated a national historic site on September 30, 1965. Added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
Location:This site includes a portion of Pennsylvania Avenue and the area adjacent to it between the Capitol and the White House.
Special Features:Referred to as "America's Main Street," Pennsylvania Avenue encompasses Ford's Theatre National Historic Site (see separate entry), several blocks of the Washington commercial district, the Old Post Office Tower, and a number of federal structures.
