Where we live, the wild daffodil Narcissus pseudonarcissus grows in profusion, its chrome yellow trumpets surrounded by pale primrose
perianths. Though it's only eight inches high, the impact it creates is dramatic.
General aspects of fruit and
perianth in decomposition (asterisk).
The
perianth is oblonge-cylindric, terete, with a few weak folds above.
However, aesthetically, its rare ivory white
perianth (petals) and two coloured corona (trumpet) in both amber-orange and buttermilk white, means that Alnwick Magic will always be distinctly visible in its striking clusters to both visitors and gardeners alike."
The individual unisexual flowers lack a
perianth, the pistillate flower consisting of 1 (rarely 2) pistil(s) subtended by a scale, and the staminate flower consisting of 1-3 stamens borne in a scale.
Fruit obovoid to 2 cm high and 1.8 cm in diameter, often with abortive carpels visible and more or less developed, exocarp nearly smooth when fresh, red at maturity, dotted with lenticels,
perianth with triangular petals, staminodes triangular, obtuse at apex, to 2 mm long, sometimes with abortive anther.
After separating the
perianth parts and stamens, stigmas with three parts were collected and weighted on an analytical scale.
Together, the calyx and corolla are termed the
perianth.
Refuge use by the coconut mite Aceria guerreronis: Fine scale distribuition and association with other mites under the
perianth. Biological Control, San Diego, v.43, n.1, p.102-110, 2007.
The paratype collection represents a xanthic color form with the "
perianth white" and the "inflorescence golden yellow" (!
Like nearly all other Nyctaginaceae, the fruit is an achene, surrounded by an "anthocarp," a persistent accessory fruit that develops from the lower part of the uniseriate
perianth. In Tripterocalyx, the anthocarp enlarges greatly, hardens, and develops three or four large, membranaceous wings.
