Born July 27, 1907, in Ljubotin, Montenegro; died Feb. 13, 1974, in Belgrade. Yugoslav painter; member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Belgrade (1961).
Lubarda graduated from the Art School in Belgrade (1925) and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1926). In the 1930’s and 1940’s he painted landscapes (views of Montenegro and scenes of Paris) and still lifes in a style close to expressionism; in the late 1940’s and the 1950’s he created monumental, dynamic compositions on national epic and historical themes (Battle on Kosovo Polje, fresco, 1953; Executive Veće of the Socialist Republic of Serbia, Belgrade), and in the mid-1950’s he took up abstract expressionism (The Sun Snake, 1962, Museum of Modern Art, Belgrade).
