Pictet studied in Geneva, Dresden, Bonn, and Paris from 1876 to 1880. From 1882 to 1932 he worked at the University of Geneva, where he became a professor in 1894. He is known for his research on heterocyclic compounds, alkaloids, and related substances, as well as carbohydrates. In 1904 he synthesized nicotine and divided it into optical antipodes. He also obtained the disaccharides maltose, lactose, and melibiose and the trisac-charide raffinose.
