Pindemonte, Giovanni

 

Born Dec. 4, 1751, in Verona; died there Jan. 23, 1812. Italian poet and playwright.

The son of an aristocrat, Pindemonte participated in the French Revolution, which he glorified in revolutionary-classical odes. He was a member of the government of the Cisalpine Republic, to which he dedicated a sonnet in 1797. In his poetry he praised Napoleon, whom he saw as Italy’s liberator. His heroic-patriotic tragedies Bacchanalia (1788), Guinevere of Scotland (1796), Orso Ipato (1797), and Elena and Gerardo (1799) are written in the style of V. Alfieri.
