Pirogue Island State Park
Location:1 mile north of Miles City on MT 59, 2 miles east on Kinsey Road, then 2 miles south on county road.
Facilities:Picnic area, bike trail, hiking trail (2.4 miles), horseback riding trail.
Activities:Fishing, hiking, bicycling, wildlife viewing, boating (non-motorized only), agate collecting.
Special Features:This typical cottonwood-covered island on the Yellowstone River
provides a natural haven for waterfowl, bald eagles, and white-tailed
and mule deer, making it an excellent site for wildlife viewing. It's
also a good place to hunt for moss agates. During low water, a small
channel can be accessed by foot to get to the island by foot, and
access is always available by floating the river. Captain Clark and his
men, along with Sacagawea and baby Pomp, are believed to have camped on
the island on their return trip east to Saint Louis in 1806.
