Port Arthur

 

a city in the southern USA, in Texas. Port on Sabine Lake, linked by canal with the Gulf of Mexico. Population, 57,000 (1970; 316,000 with the neighboring city of Beaumont and suburbs). Port Arthur is the center of an important oil and sulfur region. It has oil-refining, chemical, shipbuilding, and food-processing industries, as well as enterprises that manufacture equipment for the oil industry. Oil is exported.
