A comparison of the different task conditions revealed that both manual flight phases resulted in poor detection performance for the baseline FMA, even though pilots' attention was necessarily focused on the
primary flight display (PFD) and no more than 4[degree] below the flight mode annunciations.
In the dynamic phase of autopilot flight, pilots had to perform a number of tasks that directed their visual attention away from the right-hand monitor where the mode transitions were indicated on the
primary flight display (see Figure 1).
In their place was the Columbia 400's all-glass panel, based on the Avidyne FlightMax Entegra
primary flight display (PFD) and using dual Garmin GNS430 navigators.
