Messalianism was not the only spiritual movement to express dissatisfaction with what was rapidly becoming a State religion: so, in their different ways, were Priscillianism and Pelagianism, not to mention monasticism itself (this may be the context in which we should see Manichaeism, and the continuing appeal of Gnosticism).
