Models of aggradation versus
progradation in the Himalayan foreland.
Coastal
progradation of this Top End low-energy coast is ongoing today in the context of a climate characterised by two major and clearly delineated seasons--an extended seven-month dry season from May to November, and a wet season from December to April featuring severe storms and cyclones that impact upon the coast.
In Argentina, the
progradation of the Parana River Delta sets up a large sequence of change from sediment bars, continuously depositing at the shoreline, to mature islands located upstream, formed 700-900 years ago (Iriondo & Scota, 1979).
Catherines Island records episodes of deposition interrupted by erosion spanning more than 3000 years of
progradation (based on archaeological data).
Hove, (1992) offers a possible explanation for these anomalies, according to him, the Ea sequence (or generally, Offshore wells) show an upward change from sand dominated lowstand deposits intercalated with transgressive and highstand shales towards thicker and more sand prune highstand and transgressive deposits interrupted by thinner lowstand deposits (reflecting overall
progradation across the depobelt),.
Diversion of the Peneus River has led to cycles of delta
progradation and retrogradatiin that have both buried and eroded archaeological sites.
It is likely that during Raikkula time the zone of dolomitization gradually migrated southwestwards in accordance with progressive shallowing and
progradation of the carbonate shelf, especially in the second half of the time.
Continued
progradation of the shoreline added an additional 49 beach ridges over the next 3,500 years.
The predominance of gravelly deposits in the base of the Sharon Formation, and the coarsening-upward sequence, imply
progradation under stable or rising sea level conditions.
Prolific production of grainy nearshore carbonate sediment on the flanks of paleohighs initiated
progradation of shallow-water strata.
