[′ran·ē ′ȯil ‚mīn·iŋ ‚sis·təm] (petroleum engineering)
A method used to get oil from oil sands that involves driving mine galleries from shafts communicating to the surface in impermeable strata above and below the oil strata; holes drilled at short intervals along the galleries into the oil sands drain the oil or gas through pipes sealed in the drill holes into tanks from which the gas or oil is pumped to the surface.
