Red Hills State Park
Location:Southeastern Illinois, midway between Olney and Lawrenceville on US 50.
Facilities:More than 100 Class A campsites with electricity, water, and access to
a shower building with flush toilets (é), primitive tent camping
area, rent-a-cabin, equestrian campground, youth group tent camping
area, picnic areas, shelters, playgrounds, restrooms (é), trails (8
miles), boat ramp, boat rentals, concession, restaurant, gift shop.
Activities:Camping, boating (electric motors only), canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, hunting, ice fishing, sledding, ice skating.
Special Features:Park is situated at the westernmost edge of the first land in Illinois ceded by
Native Americans to the United States. Red Hills is the highest point
of land between Saint Louis and Cincinnati, with a 120-foot tower and cross
at the summit. At the base is an open-air tabernacle where
interdenominational worship services are held Sunday evenings during
the summer.
