Respighi composed Fountains of Rome in 1916 with Pines and Roman Festivals following in 1926 and 1928.
I am pleased to add that the input on this album of the Prague Chamber Orchestra--the recordings of
Respighi's Gli Uccelli (1974) and Dvofak's Czech Suite (1976) is outstanding too.
Italian composer
Respighi's life and career touched on both the 19th and 20th centuries.
Respighi was a contemporary of the Italian verismo composers--Mascagni, Leoncavallo and Puccini--and he completed eight operas himself (none of which survives in the standard repertory) as well as a dozen other minor vocal works.
Elsa
Respighi (born Elsa Olivieri-Sangiacomo) was a gifted and promising singer when she enrolled in the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, but someone who had only dabbled in composition.
The Noah's Ark sequence, featuring Donald Duck (both funny and, dare I say it, a little moving), was accompanied by sections of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, while whales basked in an icy, aurora-illuminated world as the Phil glistened its way through
Respighi's Pines of Rome.
Highlights include works by Grieg, Hindemith, Rota,
Respighi, Watkins and Martinu, as well, of course, Sibelius and Strauss performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
This entertaining program also features works by Schumann, Moreno, Ponce,
Respighi, Donizetti and more.

The composers--Ferrucio Busoni, Alfredo Casella, Francesco Malipiero, Ottorino
Respighi, Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Vicenzo Davico, Goffredo Petrassi, Nino Rota and Mario Pilati--influenced the development of 20th-century Italian music.
