De Niro, Robert

(1943–  ) film actor; born in New York. After studying acting with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg, he worked off-Broadway before entering films and gaining acclaim in Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). A versatile actor who strived for intense authenticity, he won an Academy Award for The Godfather Part II (1974). Graduating to leading man status, he received another Oscar for Raging Bull (1980).
