Rockford

 

a city in the northern USA, in Illinois, on the Rock River, a left tributary of the Mississippi. Population, 140,000 (1974; including suburbs, 268,000). The city is a transportation junction. As of 1973, industry employed 55,000. Machine tools and textile, sewing, and agricultural machines are manufactured. Rockford also has cement, furniture, leather, and paper industry.
