Rogneda

Date of birth unknown; died in 1000. Daughter of Prince Rogvolod of Polotsk, wife of Grand Prince Vladimir Sviatoslavich of Kiev, and mother of Prince Iziaslav Vladimiro-vich. In the late 970’s, according to the chronicle, Rogneda refused to marry Vladimir Sviatoslavich, who at the time was prince of Novgorod. In about 980, Vladimir captured Polotsk, killed Rogneda’s father and two brothers, and forcibly married her, giving her the name of Gorislava.
