Facilities:Picnic area, vault toilet, interpretive displays.
Activities:Hiking, bicycling, wildlife viewing.
Special Features:Battlefield is the site of the June 17, 1876 battle in which the Sioux and Cheyenne fought General George Crook's soldiers. This was one of the most intense battles ever waged between Native Americans and the US Army, setting the stage for the Battle of Little Bighorn that would occur eight days later.

Far West hosts sites from frontier warfare

We drove past the lights of the mines at Decker, past long lines of coal-filled boxcars at rail sidings, past the now-dammed Tongue River where Crook had camped, and then past the sign marking the entrance for Rosebud Battlefield State Park. About the time we passed the turnoff to the park, the land began a transformation from dusty brown range to mixed grassland and forest.
