Rossant, James
(1928–2009)Architect and planner Rossant’s many projects include the planning of Reston, VA, and the 1966 master plan of lower Manhattan that led to the building of Battery Park City. His first significant project was the codesign of 1962’s Butterfield House, a modern apartment building in a Greenwich Village neighborhood of historic townhomes. His partner for that project was William J. Conklin, with whom he practiced until 1995. Their design for Reston, a city of 75,000 outside Washington, DC, for developer Robert E. Simon, included planning commercial and residential districts, landscaping, recreation, and culture. Rossant also created a series of visionary architectural drawings. See Utopian Architecture.
