We started with the supposition that the SCM file drawer should be full of manuscripts, many of them rightfully collecting dust, but a few wrongly hidden away.
As the call for papers noted, the SCM file drawer should contain those manuscripts that authors have given up on for whatever reason.
Using the literature, our own experiences and the essays we propose three interrelated explanations for a seemingly empty SCM file drawer.
The additional data we collected suggest that there should be some manuscripts in the SCM file drawer, but clearly not as many as we expected.
