The timing of the electromyogram in the lateral myotomes of mackerel and saithe at different swimming speeds.
On the actual numbers--combined 2006 TACs (total allowable catch) for cod will be 23,205 tonnes, haddock 51,851 tonnes, saithe 123,250 tonnes, whiting 23,620 tonnes, plaice 57,441 tonnes, mackerel 47,132 tonnes and herring 454,751 tonnes.
Historically, abundance of North Sea haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus) and saithe (Pollachius virens) with stomachs containing Atlantic herring eggs were used as indicators of the concentrations of herring eggs (Hempel and Hempel, 1971); in years of light spawning, cod and haddock can consume up to 60% of the total eggs deposited.(1) Stomachs of sand eels (Ammodytes marinus) have been observed to be full of Atlantic herring eggs (Rankine and Morrison, 1989), and perch (Perca fluviatilis) has been found to be the most important consumer of herring eggs in the Archipelago Sea (Rajasilta et al., 1993).
The two organisations particularly question the quota reductions proposed for the following species: anglerfish (-20% to -38%); blue ling (-20%); cod (-20% to -25%); common sole (-20% to -80%); haddock (-20% to -55%); hake (-32%); herring (-18% to -20%); megrims (-20% to -40%); Norway lobster (-18% to -21%); plaice (-19% to -36%); pollack, saithe, sole, sprat and whiting (-20%).
Catches of saithe and haddock were also up compared with 2002, while the amount of scallops caught fell by 80% and the capelin and shrimp catches fell by 37% and 23% respectively, according to the Icelandic fishing industry news service InterSeafood.com.
But the limits on saithe - a French delicacy - and herring - popular in Denmark and Netherlands - are likely to be increased.
TACs for 2013 have been raised from 2012 levels by 15% for haddock, 15% for saithe, 11% for whiting, 15% for plaice and 18% for herring.
The other TACs for the North Sea were set as follows: 39,166 tonnes for haddock, 79,320 tonnes for saithe, 17,056 tonnes for whiting, 84,410 tonnes for plaice, and 405,000 tonnes for herring.
