Saline County State Fish & Wildlife Area
Location:5 miles southeast of Equality in southeastern Illinois, bordering the
Shawnee National Forest (see separate entry in national forests
chapter).
Facilities:Tent and trailer campsites (no electricity), horsemen's campground,
picnic areas, concession, hiking trails (9 miles), equestrian trails,
boat rentals, boat ramps, 2 docks.
Activities:Camping, boating (10 HP limit), fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting.
Special Features:Site of springs and wells that furnished brine for one of the two salt
works in the area. Before the first settlers arrived, Native Americans
also produced salt from the springs here. Extracting salt from the
springs' water became too expensive once commercial producers began
manufacturing salt, and the land that was once so highly prized was
sold off.
